Wisdom Teeth Removal

Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, and swelling.

Whether your wisdom teeth are causing problems or you wish to avoid these problems altogether, wisdom tooth removal can be beneficial.

Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dental Care in Joppa, MD, can provide virtually painless wisdom tooth removal.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth And Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth, which are also called third molars, are the four teeth that grow at the back of your mouth when you are in your teens or early twenties. These molars can cause problems if they grow in at an angle or get trapped under the gums, which oral surgeons call "impaction."

In these types of cases, oral surgeons usually recommend tooth extraction to avoid more dental health problems, as well as symptoms like pain, swelling, and stiffness. In some situations, patients elect to have each wisdom tooth removed in the very earliest stages of development in order to prevent these issues completely.

How Wisdom Teeth Cause Misalignment

When there isn't room for wisdom teeth to fully erupt in your mouth, they can push other teeth out of alignment. Not only is this painful, but it can also be stressful for patients who have already repositioned their teeth using orthodontic methods. Preventive wisdom tooth removal can safeguard the alignment of your teeth.

The Two Main Types Of Wisdom Tooth Removal

Emergency

If your wisdom teeth are impacted, you'll know. The condition typically causes pain, swelling, or stiffness. By acting sooner rather than later, you can find relief — without visiting an oral surgeon.

Our dentist will keep you comfortable with sedation so that you can return to your everyday life. We'll send you home with clear instructions for your recovery too, as well as a prescription to manage any tooth or gum pain.

Preventative

Once we get your scans completed, we can assess whether preventative wisdom tooth removal is necessary. It's possible that it won't be because some patients are born without wisdom teeth.

Other patients over 25 who haven't yet encountered problems may be able to avoid impaction or removal entirely. We'll assess your case and honestly give you an answer about your best options.

Late & Weekend Appointments

/

Wisdom teeth impaction can happen at any time. If your molars are impacted, causing swelling or stiffness, then you can find relief quickly. We offer convenient late and weekend wisdom teeth removal appointments for Bel Air-area dental patients.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth that was causing me so much pain over the weekend. I called this office as a new patient on Monday morning at 8am and they said it’s rare but they had a cancellation for 8:30am !!! They got me right in! I filled out my paperwork, took X-rays and got my tooth pulled out in an hour! The staff was super friendly! The dentist said he can pull my tooth out in 10 minutes and he really did! I’m more than thankful! I’ve already scheduled a cleaning with them.

Imaging

Our Bel Air-area dentists will review your digital scans to identify your needs and wisdom tooth position. You're welcome to look at any images and ask questions about your wisdom teeth, impaction, and options. Then, we'll carefully plan your oral surgery.

Patient Comfort

For your comfort, the wisdom tooth treatment area will be numbed. If you have chosen sedation, you will receive instructions beforehand and we will monitor your comfort throughout the procedure.

Oral Surgery

If your wisdom teeth have erupted, they will be gently loosened and extracted. Impacted teeth may require the dentist to make an incision in the gums to release the tooth from the bone. In some cases, the dentist may need to separate the tooth into smaller pieces before gently extracting them.

Recovery

If needed, the extraction sites will be sutured closed. To help stop bleeding, you will be asked to bite gently on sterile gauze to help a blood clot form. The dentist will give you instructions on how to care for your mouth over the next few days to avoid infection or dry socket, which happens when a blood clot does not form or dislodges before the extraction site heals.
